Intermediate Web Authoring
Course Description
This yearlong course will continue to build students’ understanding of Web design, the principles of design, and the creation of a Web site from concept to presentation. Students will continue working with XHTML, CSS and Dreamweaver at a more advanced level.
Students will continue to explore various aspects of the Web design process including: planning, consistent page construction, Web standards, problem-solving, metting a client’s needs and revisions, and more. Web design history and career opportunities will be further explored. Students will create real life projects like business sites and Web logs (A.K.A. blogs).
This course develops essential workplace skills, emphasizing the professionalism, technology, and design terminology needed for today’s Web Designer.
Course Outcomes
As a result of successfully completing this course:
- Students will learn appropriate behavior for a professional environment.
- Students will become adept at the use of XHTML, CSS and Dreamweaver.
- Students will independently design Web sites from concept to presentation.
- Students will work collaboratively to create brand identity and organized Web sites.
- Students will be well-versed in the terminology consistent with a design studio environment.
Prerequisites
Students will be expected to have completed an introductory course in Web Authoring with a C or above. Students should be able (to some degree) to:
- Work professionally within a design team.
- Identify numerous careers which are attainable with the right training.
- Understand how the history of the Internet affects how we work with it now.
- Evaluate Web sites for usability, accessibility, content and visual design.
- Plan a Web design project according to a client’s needs and follow the plan through.
- Code a Web page by hand using XHTML and CSS according to Web standards.
- Use the elements and principles of design in a decisive fashion.
- Develop Web page layouts that are appealing and functional.
- Understand how Web typography works, and use it effectively in a design.
- Explain how color works, and what various colors/color combinations communicate to others.
- Legally obtain or create graphics for a Web page, and optimize them for the Web.
- Use Dreamweaver competently to create Web pages and Web sites in an efficient manner.
- Create mockups by hand or in Adobe Photoshop or other graphics program.
Expected Course Path
Students who successfully complete Intermediate Web Authoring will be prepared to take Advanced Web Authoring.
